Open Play at the PARK continues MON, May 17 and Mon, May 24!

Hello everyone,

Last Monday, May 10, we held Open Play at the Park — our first in-person event in fourteen months! It was a success, with 26 people showing up to play chess. Everyone expressed joy at being able to finally see each other and sit across the chessboard again. There was much eagerness to repeat the event, so we are continuing with these for the immediate future!

We are scheduling for the next two weeks: this Mon, May 17 and Mon, May 24. We will skip the following week, May 31 as it is Memorial Day.

Location: Conejo Creek North Park    (large park behind the library & senior center)  Click or scroll down for Google Maps.

Hours:
May 17   –   5:00–7:45 pm      earlier start than last week!
May 24   –   5:30–7:45 pm

Feel free to come or go anytime — this is a casual event.

Our tentative meeting spot is the Lakeside Pavilion (the largest pavilion and the second that you pass on your way into the park). However, we do not have it reserved, so we will move to one of the other pavilions (Creekside or Willowbend) if it happens to be occupied.

Masks required.  We will social distance as best as possible between boards.

Bring your own chess sets or clocks (we will have some available for use as well).

***This means that there will no longer be Monday evening online tournaments in our chess.com club. Instead, we may move them to a different evening.

Post in this forum if you would like us to continue online tourneys. The frequency and day depends on your input!***

We look forward to seeing you face-to-face across the chess board once again!

TOCC Open Play in the PARK May 10!! Club Semi-REOPENING

At long last, the TOCC is reopening for IN-PERSON PLAY! Well, in some form.

We will be meeting at Conejo Creek Park North this Monday, May 10 for Open Play.

Hours: 5:30–7:45 pm.  Feel free to come or go anytime — this is a casual event.

Our tentative meeting spot will be the Lakeside Pavilion (the largest one and the second that you pass on your way into the park). However, we do not have it reserved, so we will move to one of the other pavilions (Creekside or Willowbend) if it happens to be occupied.

Masks required.  We will social distance as best as possible between boards.

Bring your own chess sets or clocks (we will have a few available for use as well).

We will decide whether or not to continue this type of meeting for the immediate future depending on Monday’s success.

We still have not received word from the Goebel Center on reopening, so no update there. However we are hopeful we will be back to OTB tournaments before long, especially with the full statewide reopening slated for Jun 15!

This event will be in lieu of the usual Mon evening online tourney.

SIMUL with NM Larry Smith on Feb 25!

2/18 Update: Registration and waitlist are currently full! However, spots may open up at any time — shoot us an email!

On Feb 25, 2019, the TOCC will be hosting a simultaneous exhibition (“simul’) with NM Larry Smith! Larry has been a chess master for over 30 years (with a peak rating of 2312) and is the TOCC’s five-time Club Champion (co-champion in 2014 and 2018).

In this event, Larry will be playing against 16 people at once. This is an excellent opportunity to play a slow game against a master for those who may never face one in a tournament game!

Click here to view flyer for more details on how this event works.

Since there is limited seating in this event, participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis! That means that only the first 16 players who sign up will get to participate.

If you want to participate, reserve your spot right away by emailing us at ThousandOaksChess@att.net!

After 16 spots are filled, the next 5 players who sign up will go on a waiting list. They will be next in line to get into the event if there are any cancellations or no-shows.

This event is free of charge. Our recommended rating range for participants is 500-1600.

Once again, there are only 16 spots, so reserve your place now! Hope to see you there!

As a reminder, the club will be closed Mon, Feb 18 for President’s Day.
